De-Electrify Crime: Unpaid Speeding Tickets

Richmond, Virginia, installed speed cameras in school zones. Unpaid speeding tickets probably correlate with drivers more likely to continue to speed through school safety zones. From a news report

Unpaid speeding tickets are piling up in Richmond.

The Richmond Police Department (RPD) released 2025 data showing drivers continue to speed through 26 school zones across the city.

Numbers revealed that more than 102,350 speeding citations were mailed to drivers caught by school zone safety cameras. Those citations total nearly $6.4 million dollars in fines, and as of May, $1,925,350 are still unpaid.[30%]

The incentive to prevent speeding is non-existent if no punishment. A solution for safer school zones is de-electfrication for at least 7 days and a doubling of the money. This will reduce speeding.

As news outlets will publish wanted criminals so should they report drivers whose homes were de-electrified for unpaid speeding tickets.
