Reading: A Birth Control Tool
A love of reading has many benefits including reducing unexpected babies from love-making.
Human Nature:
Is reading a factor why the state of Mississippi is #1 in unplanned pregnancies and #2 in lowest education? Bored people seek cheap, easy thrills. Nothing is as cheap as a cheeriO.
A study of social norms showed the cost of intimacy for a male was the lowest in history. The cost unit of measurement? Time. How much time must a male spend in worktime or talktime to win the battle of the sexes.
Curiosity and reading are keys to a happier life, in part, by lessening the chances of an unwarranted, expensive pregnancies. The Japanese have a saying, "The most expensive things in life are first free." Free parking is often $100 towing fee. Free love can be an 18 years of child costs. There are no free lunches, only hidden costs.
| Raising a child in the U.S. costs an average of $303,418 to over $400,000
from birth to age 18, depending on your location and lifestyle. This averages
out to about $16,850 to $23,000 per year, which excludes higher education
and medical delivery costs. (Google: Cost of raising a child in U.S.)
At an average U.S. hourly wage of $25/hour, the dollar figures translate
into 12,000 lifetime workhours or 500 annual workhours. This time does not
include the other time demands of raising a child.
Taxpayers and businesses are often required to pay for people's freedom who had cheeriOs beyond their financial means.

| Currently, the means for encouraging young people to read are failing.
Ask any college professor about the
reading skills of incoming freshmen. A functionally
illiterate citizenry is a danger to itself and others. Americans are low
vocabulary readers who voted for the empty overblown promises of a non-reading,
social media President.
Quantification for needed learning not purported learning.
Standardized tests are needed for all levels including college. An economy needs members who have the basic math and reading skills to optimally recognize and solve problems. There are people who don't seek employment because they cannot read the simple guidelines of being a fast-food server. Standardized national tests are especially needed for college courses and degrees. Diploma mills now give credits for life experiences. Everyday, new on-line colleges are advertised on TV offering degrees for next-to-nothing in new learning. As a person who completed undergrad cum laude in just over two years at a 4-year state university of 29,000 students(transcript), I am a victim of "stolen honor" when a person on TicToc brags about an undergraduate degree and a masters degree in less than a year for a few thousand dollars. The Roman Emperor Augustus ordered a census of the Roman Empire about two thousand years ago. The U.S. needs to use the internet to assess individual's reading, writing and math skills. Those who fall below a national standard will be required to take on-line courses until sufficiently knowledgeable of basic information. Refusals can expect to be de-electrified for wasting one's mind. Some groups will object to teaching basic information. Learners don't need to believe it, but they need to know what society, not non-societies, deem as needed for a stable world. Mandatory for all: You don't have to believe them but you have to know them with a 100% test score no matter how many times you take the tests.

For-profit colleges are funded by Pell Grants and student loans. They are more expensive and less beneficial than public institutions. The graduated student has high debts and low prospects. Considered the following contrast that was prepared for a young friend thinking about going to a for-profit private school versus a community college.
| Community College | For-Profit College | Comment | |
| Bankrupt | Never | December 2018 | 5 months ago, headlines show they go bankrupt frequently. Owners start new ones with new names. A rip-off. RTD headline (Dec. 5, 2018): Thousands of students impacted after Virginia College abruptly closes. |
| Tuition | Free | $14,000 | Atlantic: For-Profit Colleges Leave Students Swimming in Debt |
| Graduation | 58% | 25% | |
| Loan Defaults | 14% | 7% | |
| Building | 3 sites | Strip mall | Community College owns buildings and property while For-Profit College rents space |
| History | 1972 | 1983(1992) | |
| Accreditation | Yes | None | A cheap, worthless degree. |
| Accountability | Yes | None | Community College: taxpayers, State Board of education, Governor. |
| Quality | high | low | A cheap, worthless degree in real world. |
| Credits Transfer | Yes | no | For-Profit College is a diploma mill, that is, it's diplomas are not backed up by education. Your class credits cannot be transferred to a 4-year school. Community College's credits are transferable to Virginia 4-year universities. |
| Faculty, PhD | Many | Temps, few | Revolving door, For-Profit College has no permanent staff |
Greed is behind the diploma mills: Individual and Institution. Do not expect the media to be forthright as indicated by the actions of the Washington Post. Before the Graham family sold the Post to Jeff Bezo for $250 million, Ninety-five percent(95%) of the Post's profits came from its chain of for-profit schools. The family sold the Post but kept the schools. The big question is why do politicians allow For-Profit schools to stiff naive, 1st generation students with no education and with life-destroying debt? |
